Moon Gazer’s Viewing Card

This is a handy credit card sized Moon viewing tool and guide. It is best used during the Gibbous and Full phases of the Moon, when the surface is too bright to comfortably look at.

The Card reduces the amount of glare when looking at the Moon, increasing detail and contrast, which enables easier observations with less eye strain.

What this is:

  • A tool to view the Moon in greater detail with the naked eye.
  • Designed for casual observing; something you can keep with you anywhere.
  • A quick reference guide for regions of the Moon’s surface, for any astronomer using a telescope or not.

What this is not:

  • A magnifier – if anything, the Moon may look smaller without the glare.
  • A sun viewer – do NOT look at the Sun with this card!
  • A telescope adapter – you can try, but most eyepieces are designed to send light to the whole eye, not just a tiny part of the optic.

Hold the card close to your eye, at about the distance an eyeglass lens would be. Glasses wearers can try holding the card inside or outside of their glasses; find whatever works best for you. Look through the hole in the middle. You should see better definition of the main lunar surface features. It may take a minute for your eye to adapt.
